Information
The Siskiyou Arts Council (SAC) was
established in 1972 as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, public benefit non-profit
corporation which serves as the local arts planning and programming agency for
Siskiyou County. SAC is authorized by the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors
to serve as the County's representative to the California Arts Council's
State-Local Partnership Program.
The mission of
the Siskiyou Arts Council is to bring heart and vitality to our communities, and
to foster a spirit of creativity and prosperity through excellence in the arts.
The grass roots vision of the Siskiyou Arts Council spans three decades, from
the mid 1970's through the present day, offering this county a wide range of
art-related services and events.
The Board of Directors and volunteers of SAC believe that the vitality of local
art and artists is an essential part of our community's growth, expression, and
prosperity. Therefore, it is of great importance to support an effective Arts
Council that enriches the quality of life for all residents of Siskiyou County.
The Board of Directors are volunteers, serving a two year term and directing the
countywide activities and organizational health of the Siskiyou Arts Council.
The public is always invited to attend monthly Board meetings on the first
Thursday of each month at locations around Siskiyou County. Those interested in
serving on the Board may submit a letter of interest, and are welcome to join at
any time of the year.
Artists on the Internet!:
The SAC web site provides an On-line Artists' Registry, with World Wide
Web listings for the artists, writers, musicians and performers of Siskiyou
county. This provides rural artists with needed exposure and public access
everywhere the internet reaches. Arts organizations, services and businesses are
also invited to join the Registry, free to all Friends of SAC. When funding
allows, SAC provides free photography, in-depth interviews, and marketing
assistance for Siskiyou County artists and performers, all of which is included
on the website and used by the participating arists to further their own
careers.
Public Performances:
The Siskiyou Arts Council Talent Showcase is held annually in autumn at the COS
Theater in Weed. This fun-packed evening of entertainment features some of the
best talents in Siskiyou County. Auditions are held prior to the event, and past
performances have included hula dancers Ann Cramer and Louise Ray, Nuria's
Academy Irish dancers and Flamenco dancers, foreign exchange student pianist
Irene Pieto Jimenez, singer/songwriters Alex Colvin, Carolyn Hedger, Bernadette
Wulf, Melissa & Marc Wright and belly dancer Julie Miyasaki. For information on
this year's Talent Showcase, call the Siskiyou Arts Council office 938-0130.
Our annual Art in the Garden presents live music by local performers, art and
fine food in Mt. Shasta each summer. This annual fundraising party is held on an
evening in August at Native Grounds Nursery in Mt. Shasta. SAC hosts fine art
and art demonstrations, enterainment, hord d'ouvres and wine tasting to benefit
the Siskiyou Arts Council.
SAC provides needed support for independent events year round, including the
Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival, the Mt. Shasta City Dance Theater, Yreka's ACT
and Rd Scarf Society, and Joan Lucas' Senior Theater classes at College of the
Siskiyous.
In April of 2007, The Yreka Community Theatre will host California's poet
laureate Al Young in a presentation with local poets, as Young kicks off his
"Top to Bottom" tour of California. SAC is working with the California Arts
Council and local organizations to sponsor the Poet Laureate event.
Downtown Friday Night Art Walks:
The Downtown Friday Night Art Walks program was launched by SAC and JEDI in
communities throughout Siskiyou County. Community organizers and volunteers
continue these events with SAC assistance. SAC works with volunteers throughout
the county to organize and promote the monthly Mt. Shasta Third Friday Art Walk,
Weed Arts Evnts, and the annual Dunsmuir ArtWalk.
